Dog Training Tricks: Get Your Dog To “Come” Every Time You Call

Dog Training Tricks: Get Your Dog To “Come” Every Time You Call

You tell your dog or puppy to “come”. He ignores you. You tell him again. Same result. You get frustrated and yell it louder. He heard you the first time. He just didn’t understand what you wanted him to do or he didn’t have a reason to. You can fix that.

You don’t need an expensive trainer for this easy lesson, nor do you need to attend the pet store “obedience classes” unless you’d just enjoy doing so. I’m going to show you how to get your dog to come to you immediately, every time. Quick and easy.

First, it’s important to understand that dogs desire to please us. It may not appear so when your dog is ignoring your commands – that’s because he doesn’t understand your commands or perhaps your method for teaching him has backfired on you, which is the most common problem. What you think you’re telling him and what he’s thinking may be two very different things.

It’s important that your dog come to you when you tell him to. His safety could depend on it, especially if he tends to dart out the door every time it’s opened. If he’s not obeying you and coming when you call, the problem isn’t him, it’s you. Under what circumstances have you been giving that command? Are you yelling it at him for him to come to you only when you’re unhappy with him and when he’s to be punished somehow? Not exactly motivating. Certainly an unsuccessful approach.

It’s well worth a few minutes of play every day to teach your dog to “come” immediately and every time you command it. And I do mean “play”, not “work” – it’s fun and a great bonding experience.

Food is a terrific doggie motivator, so get some small one-bite treats (no big biscuits that take time to eat and thus distract from your goal). When you’re sitting there watching TV or at your computer, most anywhere really, tell your dog to “come” with a calm, happy voice and give him a treat when he does. Only one treat, we aren’t trying to teach him to beg!

A little later, tell him to “come” and give him “lovies”, pet him, praise him. Another time, play with him with his favorite toy for a few minutes. Show him that “come” means something good will happen. Do this frequently throughout the day, rotating the rewards, and you’ll see that he will soon be happily obeying your command every time.

Sounds easy, doesn’t it? It is! That’s really all there is to it.

Bad Dog Training Tricks – Training Tricks for Dogs and Owners

Bad Dog Training Tricks – Training Tricks for Dogs and Owners

Training a dog in obedience is not a simple task when the dog’s owner has not received proper training himself. The majority of dog owners do not know how to train their dog and expect the animal to think like humans, which lead to quite a lot of disappointment. There are simple methods that can be learned by reading obedience training books or watching dog training DVDs in addition to attending dog training classes with a qualified dog trainer, dog and owner together.

The most important thing in training a dog is to use basic communication that the dog has learned to understand and obey. There are 5 basic commands which are the standard in the English language, that every dog should obey to: sit, down, stay, heel and come. The command words used are not important but consistency in their use is. The same words in Italian or Chinese will be understood by a dog that was trained in one or the other language.

The purpose of training a dog is to have the animal behave properly when around members of the family, invited strangers and other pets. It is recommended to begin training when the puppy arrives in its new home to correct unwanted dog behavior and teach discipline. Basic training classes with a professional trainer start with puppies of a least 3 to 6 months old, and before that time, the owner should prepare himself and read a few books on the subject.

Dog training is all about good communication between the owner and his dog. The dog has to understand and obey simple commands while the handler has to interpret the dog’s signals when it is nervous, excited, confused or happy. Obedience training is to train the dog, according to the owner’s perspective, what behaviors are good and which are bad.

There are four signals used by dog trainers to communicate with the dog:

- The reward signal for correct behavior, letting the dog know it has earned a reward.
- The keep going signal for correct behavior, telling the dog it has to carry on in order to get a reward.
- The no reward signal for incorrect behavior, to tell the dog to try something new.
- The punishment signal for incorrect behavior, to tell the dog it has earned a punishment.

These signals can be sent with simple words or with a little mechanical clicker.

Obedience training is most of the time a short course of 6 to 10 weeks when the owner learns how to communicate and train his animal with a few basic commands. The German Shepherd or the Doberman Pinscher are easier to train than other breeds with a minimum amount of time but all dogs can eventually be trained, even the most difficult.

Bash on a Budget – Tips and Tricks From The Party Goddess!

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 21, 2008

Marley Majcher, Founder and CEO of The Party Goddess! (www.thepartygoddess.com), has important insight about the economy and suggestions to stage a successful event during this slowdown.

Here are some unfortunate statistics:

According to a March 2008 National Association of Catering Executives report…

48% (of caterers and event planners) reported that they were seeing declines in event spending.
62% reported that customers are purchasing less expensive meals and avoiding luxury items.
52% reported clients booking events on Fridays and Sundays to avoid premium pricing.

So can you throw a real bash on a budget even if you’re feeling the squeeze? Marley offers these invaluable tips:

Think multi-purpose – make every aspect of your event work double time
Create edible centerpieces (individual sweets on a pedestal in the middle of each table double as décor and dessert)
Use chalkboard paint on wooden napkin rings or pots to do double duty as place cards
Invest in some cylindrical vases to use for flowers, as buffet risers, to hold décor and other party necessities
Create an inspiration board for your party to collect and organize thoughts as well as build tons of excitement

” The fact that we’re in a recession is starting to sound like a broken record. The gloom and doom surrounding us all would take the excitement out of even the most festive occasions. This lagging economy is reminiscent of the post 9/11 period where people decided to entertain at home more, keeping the guest list to those they really wanted to entertain, cutting out lavish extras and spending smart without going overboard. The key to staging an amazing event, is to pick a focus and maximize your bang for the buck. I help people realize their vision with a minimal amount of drama,” stated Majcher.

In Celebration of Teachers: A Dog Can Teach Us New Tricks

I used to say that the number of good teachers that I’ve had, I could count on one hand. There was Miss Kirby from the second grade who taught me that reading opens a door to the world. There was Mr. Opland, our school band, chorus and music teacher who taught me to sing and play some of the world’s most beautiful music, even though I lacked the natural talent to be great. There was Miss Heath, my high school English teacher and drama coach who taught me about passion and gave me the will to try things outside my comfort zone. There was Mr. Morowitz, my journalism teacher who taught me that good writing could ease someone’s pain or inspire someone else to action. There was Eugene Lyons, my college theatre professor who taught me that remaining silent to injustice was unfair to myself. These were the teachers who truly inspired me and who made an indelible mark on my future.

But that was when I was only counting the teachers I had in school. Once I realized that every person and every situation had the opportunity to teach me something, my roster of good teachers grew considerably. Many of those teachers came in unexpected forms – the bankruptcy of the company I was working for, a 4-year-old girl in my son’s preschool class, Russian-born comedian, Yakov Smirnoff and our dog, Max.

Max, was a seven-month-old Airedale Terrier, we adopted from the local humane society as a companion for our female Airedale, Bernie. When we helped Max pass 11 years later, I looked for books to help ease the grief of our family and that would especially speak to our 10-year old son. What I found were either chapter books or young reader picture books. Instead I decided to write a story which remembered the major episodes of Max’s life paired with the lessons we learned from him.

Over the years, when a friend’s dogs would pass, I would often share the typewritten manuscript. The manuscript got passed around so much that it became (pardon the pun) dog-eared. Afterwards, the response was always the same, “You should publish this.” It took me six years to finally find the design style, book format and time to do it and the result is my book, “Life to the Max: Maxims for a Great Life by a Dog named Max.”

What I wanted to accomplish with my book was to provide not only a vehicle for dog lovers to deal with the loss of a much-loved family pet, but also to give families a means to talk about important life issues – disappointment, adoption, friendship, love, family, illness and death. It also deals with the importance of a positive attitude when dealing with life’s challenges. Even though it deals with the important stuff of life, it really is a joyous romp. It provides a gateway for remembrance, reflection and inspiration.

I also think it gives people of all ages an opportunity to appreciate what we learn from the experiences we have in life and to recognize the value of the teachers who come into our lives – no matter in what form they present themselves. What we come to realize is that teachers are all around us. The trick is whether or not we choose to learn from them.

Valentine’s Day Tips and Tricks: From Dumb to Divine

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 8, 2008

Marley Majcher, Founder and CEO of The Party Goddess! (www.ThePartyGoddess.com), has a series of creative and affordable tips that will transform the way you celebrate Valentine’s Day. Fun Ideas Include:

Cluster votive or pillar candles atop some pink, red and/or white candy for a simple, cool and festive centerpiece
Say “I Love You” (or any other message of your choice) by placing these handwritten words of affection inside a box of chocolates for your darling to discover
Decorate a salad with heart shaped beets or croutons, or use the same design to create cookies, brownies or pancakes
Pour a bowl of oatmeal in a heart shaped pattern, and add festive toppings for a special breakfast
Turn a fortune cookie into a valentine by wrapping it in a damp paper towel, and then microwave it for 50-60 seconds. Remove the original message, insert your own greeting and mold the cookie back to its original shape

“Valentine’s Day is such a fabulously gratuitous holiday that it’s a shame not to take full advantage of it. Even if you just gather up all of the pink and red foods, candy and accents you can think of, you’re way ahead of the game. Make your significant other feel like the rock star they are by doing something really personal, different and of course, from the heart,” said Ms. Majcher
