Why are people so down on “designer” dog breeds?

Question by Kris: Why are people so down on “designer” dog breeds?
I was just researching Cavachons online and saw that someone asked about them here and people went nuts saying they were just mutts and a scam. What’s wrong with mixing two great breeds? Is there something I’m missing? Thanks!
What is BYB? And how do hybrids kill dogs?
re: “Wow. Where are you from?” Well, I’m from the land of people who like dogs but don’t know all there is to know about them. I’m from the land of people who don’t use the phrase BYB every day. I am a responsible person trying to find the best pet for my family. I am asking questions to learn more. When I see people attack Cockapoos, etc, as nothing more than mutts, I wonder what the issue is. Now I know — bad breeders who created unwanted dogs. I appreciate the thoughtful answers most have provided.

    I dont know!
But my dog is going to have puppies!
They will be germen shepherd shiba inu mixed!

  2. ♥♥-Bloop-♥♥ says:

It’s the way they are bred . Most of them are bred by BYB who don’t know how to do it properly resulting in health problems . And they are not a breed . They are mutts .And the world is filled with unwanted animals. I don’t see why you find calling a mixed dog a mutt is offensive in anyway . Hope I helped . ;D

  3. Ethan says:

Nothing at all.I have a Hybrid breed dog myself.
Besides they are more healthier than many of the traditional pure breeds.people can look up health statistics for a lhasa poo.

  4. D says:

Most of them are puppy mill dogs, that’s the problem with them.

  5. says:

What is the point of purposely breeding to create a mutt with no purpose?

There is no point, the only thing it does it create poorly bred mutts with health problems that will eventually help to create even more crowding in all ready overcrowded shelters.

What’s wrong with mixing two great breeds?

Well, why mix them? If the 2 breeds are great in the first place, what are you trying to improve upon? And there is NO guarantee you will get the qualities you want from both breeds in the pups.

Additionally, the VAST majority of these dogs are produced by people who do no health or genetic testing, no assessment of the parental dogs to assess their fitness for breeding, no temperament testing, they don’t adequately vet or socialize the pups, they do not adequately screen the buyers, and they have no contract, no guarantee, and no provisions for never having a pup end up in a shelter.

That’s why I’m down on “designer” breeds – I see no reason to purposely breed them, and doing so adds to the numbers of bad dogs, bad owners and shelter populations.

Add: a BYB is a back-yard-breeder – someone who breeds only for money. And a hybrid kills dogs the same way any other car kills dogs.

BTW, NO mixed dog is a hybrid, as they are the same species.

  7. Sheri says:

I wouldn’t necessarily say that people are being prejudice against mixed breed dogs also referred to as a mutt.

What people are commenting on for the most part is their need to educate some owners that unless a dog has only 1 breed within them they are not purebreds and definitely under any circumstances is not a breed, designer or otherwise.

There are some unscrupulous people who market their dogs as rare, designer or specialty dogs. Although there is nothing wrong with owning, adoring and loving a dog regardless of how many different breeds it took to make it. It is not a breed. These people “so called breeders” prey on the uneducated person and their knowledge of dog breeds or lack there of, to ask terribly high amounts of money.

Of course there are also the owners who do not care enough to keep an eye on their dogs and end up with accidental pregnancies of their dogs. Most times not knowing who the sire was to the pups. Some of which try selling them to make a profit due to their lack of being a responsible owner and having had their dogs spayed or neutered.

When you have mixed breeds or mutts the health of that dog has an uncertainty. There is no knowledge as to what health risk may or may not be in the future of the dog. Although many do not have any problems there are the ones that do and diagnosing them can be quite difficult.

The reason that their are so many dogs in shelters is that too many of these non-reputable breeders are breeding for the sake of breeding with no care or thought for the puppies health as they grow into adulthood.

Unfortunately in the world we live in too many people believe we have a throw away society, which includes any forms of life.

If less people breed whether it be mixed breeds or purebreds all of the dogs would be better off living in happy, loving homes as a part of the family for their entire lives.

This of course does not mean that everyone is this way but it is a real concern as the people who run and maintain those terrible puppy mills and thoughtless breeders are pulling in tons of money for these dogs. To them they are just jumping on the band wagon of a new trend to rake in the dough. These so called designer dogs are a fad and will at some point die out and unfortunately I feel sad for the pups that will end up euthanized or treated badly by bad owners.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with caring, loving and having a mixed breed, mutt as a part of your family.

It is however wrong for some people to exploit these dogs for their own benefit of making a dollar.

I have 8 dogs myself all of whom are well taken care of and loved. 6 of which are purebreds and 2 who are mutts. I do not love my purebreds any more than I love my mutts and spay/neuter any and all dogs that I do not plan on breeding.

I never breed my mixed breed dogs and only do limited breeding’s on boxers. Very limited as in 25 years of owning boxers I have only bred them 3 times.

A designer dog (mixed breed) is only letting people know that there is more than one type of breed within its dna to produce the dog.

Incidentally, as I’m sure you’ll be told often – a mix between dog breeds doesn’t constitute a new, actual, breed of dog, however people choose to name it. To become a “breed” (aside from official recognition), you need to be so many generations down the track that you’re no longer mixing breeds together – and (most importantly) the “new breed” breeds true. That is, produces offspring that consistently look a particular way, are a particular size, and have a definable temperament. This is not possible with mixes in the early generations – puppies in the same litter can end up with vastly different looks and temperaments, as some take after one or other parent more than the other. Just as is the case with any other mix (i.e. it makes no difference genetically if someone stuck two dogs of different breeds together, and gave them a cute hybrid name – or if two dogs of different breeds escaped their yards and did it all themselves. The cute name in that case would probably be mutt – but it’s the only difference ).

It is only when full consistency is achieved (takes many years and generations) that you can even start to think about creation of a new dog breed. And the consistency has to be verified over several more generations, until finally one might get recognition for a new breed.

Anyway, the point being, that whether a 2-way or a 3-way or whatever mix, that is what it is – a mixed breed dog. It would have some characteristics of each of its parents, but there is no real way of telling what each individual might inherit, or even how those traits might interact. It is unlikely to be consistently enough for you to be able to predict anything much from the characteristics of a similar mix.

  8. ...cowgirl UP... says:

No offense, but I just feel it’s kinda dumb to pay $ 200-300 for a “designer dog” who is a mutt. Especially when I will guarantee you there is the exact same “designer dog” sitting in a shelter getting ready to be euthanized for 60 bucks. Check out petfinder.com. You be the judge.

  9. BYBS abuse their pets says:

why mix two great breeds to get a mixed breed dog with crapshot genetics? If you want a bichon get a bichon, if you like cavaliers, get a cavalier. With mixes theres no guarantee on size, color, coat type, health, personality, temperment, work ability, etc.. they do NOT always get “the best of both breeds”.. it doesnt work that way.. often times the mixes get the WORST traits of both breeds.

Mixes are NOT “hybrids”.. they are mixed breed dogs. There’s no purpose or reason behind breeding them, except to make a profit. People can get the SAME THING at a shelter and save a life instead.

BYB is back yard breeder.. an irresponsible breeder who breeds for fun or profit.

It kills dogs because every time someone buys from a BYB they could have adopted and saved a dog instead.. every home that buys from a BYB is a home a shelter dog could have had.

  10. Brittany says:

Chances are these mixed breeds are coming from a greedy person (a byb or a puppy mill) that just breeds dogs in their backyard, and breeds only for the money and breeds whatever the “poo” trend is. If they thought they were creating a new respectable breed, it would take generations of breeding the perfect doggie”poo” to another perfect doggie”poo”…but that isn’t what is happening. They aren’t taking the time to make sure the breeding dogs are of breed standard in the first place, which is what true breeders do. Breeding dogs simply to sell them quickly for the trend isn’t what is best for these dogs, and the prices they are sold for are crazy!! Oh, it goes up even higher if the breeder can get a runt in the litter and advertise it as a teacup dog!

Then these people or the people that buy these dogs get on yahoo answers and ask silly questions and get upset when people try to tell them the truth about their dog. Then when the randomly mixed dog has a crazy temperment, it is placed in a shelter, where people would NEVER think to look for a dog! It’s not that people don’t like mixed breed dogs, its just that there are already many mixed breeds out there for people do adopt for reasonable prices!

  11. anne b says:

    Wow. Where are you from?

There are almost 200,000 homeless dogs listed on Petfinder right now, tonight. Some of those dogs are going to lose their lives tomorrow if they are not given homes. Most of the ones in the kill shelters are mixed breed dogs, because no one wanted them and their breeders were scum. The lucky ones were the purebreds who were pulled into breed rescue.

To purposely breed more mixed breed dogs while so many die is obscene. To purposely fund that kind of business is offensive, at the very least.

Edit: So you are saying that you have never heard of Oprah or watched the prime time news with video of puppy mills being raided across the country? The most recent one a mill in rural Texas with 500 dogs, I believe.
This is why people need to do research before making a decision about a living thing.

  12. KHAYOS-supprt HR1207!!!! says:

Hundreds of healthy dogs and puppies are killed every day due to lack of homes.
Most of these are mutts or “mixing two great breeds”. These great dogs don’t get a chance at a happy life, they just live lonley lives until the kind shelter workers take it to the back room and put it down so it doesn’t have to suffer anymore.

The ONLY dogs that should be breed are the best of their breed. They have titles, they have won championships, they have been tested…they are great examples of their breed and therefore should be breed to peserve the breed.

If these people wanted to create a new breed, they’d be doing things a lot differently. Fact is, they don’t care about their dogs, they don’t care about the puppies, they just want $ $

  13. Louise says:

Growing up I had a pure breed lab and then a golden retreiver. The lab got diabetes and went blind and our beautiful golden retreiver lived a long and happy life but had lots of hip problems.

Since getting married I have had two dogs. The first was a border collie x lab who lived to 14 years, had a beautiful temperament and was great with my children from the time they were babies. Now we have a 5mth old beagle x cavalier and she is gorgeous. She got dog of the month at dog school in her first month and the instructor says she one of the quickest learners he has had.

Before getting our beaglier – there I said it and know that will probably draw more comments from mixed breed haters, we read about the down sides to getting a cross breed but then I made an appointment with a vet and discussed the pros and cons of purebred dogs vs cross breed dogs and was told that for him there is no real difference in the no. of cross breed vs purebred dogs he sees with chronic or long term health problems and that behaviour problems are more due to the environment or the owners.

So I say choose the dog that you think is right for you and your family, spend the time with your dog, training it, caring for it and loving it and enjoy.

    BYB is back yard breeders.

  14. Karen L says:

I have no problem with mixed breed dogs. It’s all I’ve ever had and probably all I’ll ever have. What I do have a problem with is people who insist on giving them cutesy names and charging ridiculous amounts of money for a mixed breed dog, as if there aren’t already enough perfectly good mixed breed dogs needing homes at shelters. I think people who pay $ 1000 for a mutt need their heads examined. You pay lots of money for purebred dogs because breeders, the good ones that is, have spent a lot of time and money getting and keeping a consistent breed standard and try their best to minimize genetic health problems so when you buy a purebred dog, you have a pretty good idea what you have bought. That’s why they’re worth the money to many people. There’s nothing wrong with mixing two great breeds but asking and paying purebred prices for a mixed breed dog is nuts. There are apparently a lot of people out there with more money than sense and the breeders of these designer dogs take advantage of that.

  15. Kaytestb says:

They are bred by greedy people to make money and health is not a consideration. Why are we mix breeding dogs when there so many homeless dogs in shelters? If you want a mixed breed dog go to a shelter or petfinder.com. Don’t support BYBs, puppy mills, and greeders. These designer mutts are setting death sentences for homeless shelter dogs.

A BYB is a back yard breeder. Most of these “breeders” do not do the proper health checks and research before breeding. They are usually trying to make a few dollars. A reputable breeder has superior knowledge of their breed and know the health issues. They are selective in their breeding to ensure the health of the litter and future litters. They also want their puppies to go to a good home. They want to be sure that the new owner and breed will be a good match for their lifestyle and needs. There is more to breeding than having a male and a female.
    Support spay and neuter.

  16. Animalabby says:

Because all it is, is people breeding two different breeds for money. They don’t care about the dogs or anything. A good dog breeder does it for the love of the breed and doesn’t care that much about the money. Also while people are breeding mutts for big bucks there are thousands of dogs (many mixed breeds) waiting for their homes at shelters and several of them never get that because they are put to sleep because no one will take them!

Also what makes me mad is for a long while people looked at mutts as something bad and now everyone wants a designer dog. Who cares if they are a thousand dollars!? Who cares if they are bred by irresponsible people and the dog will probably end up with severe health issues in the future!? Who cares if while people buy designer dogs from “breeders” dogs die in shelters!? Who cares!!!!!!!!?

Well I will tell you right now, I care.

Ok, Ok. I am sorry for that I just needed to get it out of my system. Any who if you are looking for the “perfect” dog in for your family I would suggest maybe checking out local shelters and spending time with different dogs. Don’t make a choice right away, meet with each dog that the shelter may recommend for your family or you might think will work for a while and then go on to the next. You can find some shelters & adoptable dogs on http://www.petfinder.com
And not all shelter dogs are mixed breeds there are many purebreds out there waiting for their forever homes. If you find a breed you like please do your research on the breed & check shelters and rescue groups for that breed.

  17. show breeders sell sick pups. says:

because they are more popular than purebreds anymore..and now they can be registered too by a club…i breed pom chi mixed and i just got my litter of 3 pups registered waiting on their papers through the mail…i love the designer breeds way better than purebreds…purebreds are being destroyed with health problems..and mixed is healthier..so people are buying more mixed and it’s hurting purebred breeders..i’m getting a male and female in goldendoodles they will be registered with the ACHC too..

  18. Marna O says:

    Because:

    The term is intentionally deceiving.

The purposeful “mating” (I do not refer to uneducated “mating” of dogs as “breeding”) of 2 dogs that are not the same breed produces mixed breeds.

Making up some fancy name by combining parts of the breeds does not make the offspring a breed.

    Hence, it is false advertising.

The “designer” label is used to promote sales, to lure the uneducated public into believing the “product” is something special and rare. And to pay a whole lot of money for it!

Fact is, there are more “unusual” and “rare” mixed breeds in shelters everywhere than what the uneducated, fraudulent sellers of the so-called “designer breeds” are offering. Most are a mystery! How cool is that?!!
