Question by HorseBizGirl: Why don’t people like Science Diet dog food?
I’ve been answering lots of these dog-related questions the last few weeks and several of them have been about what type of dog food to feed. Several of those asking questions and several of those answering have said that they would not feed Science Diet.
Why?

Because it has byproducts, corn and other cheap fillers.

science diet is full of fillers and poor ingredients.
Its nothing more than a marketing gimmick.. for the same price you can find a much better brand, but people buy this brand because they think its some “scientifically formulate” brand
Science Diet is more science and less diet. The most natural and wholesome the food the better. Read your labels and avoid all by-products and long lists of chemical ingredients. There are so many good foods out there, these antiquated ones really should fade away.
It’s just not nutritious, and its full with fillers, fake meat, corn — which they can’t digest. I fed it to my puppies, not knowing it was unhealthy, and there coats became awful. It’s very dry, tangles in a day, and just awful.
It has by-products,corn,wheat,preservatives and other things that cause harm to a dog´s health.
Adult Active 1st 5 Ingredients:
Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Beet Pulp, Soybean Oil
Compare to Canidae All Life Stages
Chicken meal, turkey meal, lamb meal, brown rice, white rice,
3 meat proteins in the first 5 for Canidae and 1 in Science Diet – and it’s not even the first ingredient!!
Won’t even go into the fact that it’s by-procuct meal!
Dogs aren’t meant to have grains as the main portion of their diet.
It would be a bit like us eating McDonalds for every meal. We’d live but we wouldn’t be healthy!!
http://www.dogaware.com/ is a great site to read about dog nutrition and health (I am not affiliated with that site in any way, it’s just a favorite!)
Have you notice they just about bash every food that out there unless it gots NO artifical colours, No flavours, No preservatives, no grains, No corn, no wheat, No by-products and must have extremely high protein levels! Have you guys/girls out there, some countries don’t have these options!
Unfortuantly we don’t have the corn free , no grain free option here being australia, well very few in fact. The vets advice me not to feed extreme diets, they also told me they lead to kidney problems. Not one but 3vets, plus add to that a well respect and knowledgable pet supply store-Every single one of the staff i spoken to.
I did out of curiousity try Innova Evo- one that everyone online is raving about online. my Labrador x Golden retriever mix. She normal best friends with everyone, and no sign of aggression, if she doesn’t like someone she won’t growl or anything-she just jump out the way if they try to pat her!
I Gave her one single kibble of Innova Evo and problems started to happen IMMEDIATELY, she turned into an aggressive monster, not only did she tried to attack a dog after i took her out while on this kibble, She also tried to attack an Elderly couple. Luckily she missed, I am 120% sure if i hadn’t brought her back home after this, she would downright have torn a leg or seriously injured someone or even KILLED them!
She was back to her normal self in 2days. Luckily it was only a free sample. I immediately have not fed her anything of that brand since due to her extremely odd behaviour while on this food. Ingredients are great, but what the point in feeding such a good food, when you get serious and dangerous behaviour problems that aren’t typcial of your dog? Due to her bad reaction i am not going to try anything again over 32%protein.
I beleive its due to ingredients
Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Beet Pulp, Soybean Oil, Dried Egg Product, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Iodized Salt, Choline Chloride, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Vitamin E Supplement, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract
1st ingredient is corn
preservatives
Soybeans
Flaxseeds
By-products.
Why fix something that isn’t broke? If your dogs doing fine on the food, its obviously working for that particular dog.
What good for one dog isn’t neccessarily good for another. I personally go by protein, fats, then ingredients, but ingredients are less important to me then protein and how long the company been in business. But i do prefer meat based or meat meal as the 1st ingredient.
I have tried Science diet-i got a gift voucher- So i though i’ll give it a go, she did very well on it, but I find Proplan happen to suit my dog better. She didn’t get the gunky eyes and her coats fantastic
Here are fantastic website on various people and the good and bad results they had with the food

Not some guy who owns a website called Dog food anayalsis, Note he doesn’t even feed the food he recommends? Why is this so? If the food is as great as he is saying why is he not feeding them the brand he actually recommends? Seems abit weird to me?
I don’t feed it because my dog was pooping HUGE amounts on that food, and the ingredients were really aggravating his allergies. I was actually pretty shocked at the difference in my dog after switching him to a better food.
Honestly, it has the ingredients of a low quality food at the price of higher quality kibble. If one can afford to feed Science Diet, then you could afford to feed a much higher quality for the same price. So while I never begrudge anyone for feeding a lower quality if that is all they can afford, if you can afford SD, I just think there are better options out there.
I do not feed any of the major brands of animal food in my home because they are full of ingredients that make my stomach turn. By Products are the scraps left on the slaughterhouse floor. They are also full of fillers and preservative.
I prefer human grade pet food with as few additives as possible. You feed less of it and do not have the obesity issues that come with many of the commercial pet foods
